Apple TV’s will not be thrown away if people want movie rentals. iPhone owners will have their devices fresh and exciting with new features as well as third party apps.

If the space of time between two hardware purchases is long, that is as green as you can get. Products that last long are good for the Earth. With changes in technology, the opportunities to platformize CE will be more powerful than ever.

With software upgrades Steve Jobs is doing something that is better for the Earth. Since software is cheaper than hardware and does not result in heavy metal poisoning and landfill, I think this is the way to go.
