There is good news for iPodders with pacemakers. Well, according to an FDA study portable music devices such as iPods produce magnetic fields, however these do not adversely affect cardiac pacemakers. The claim that Apple iPod magnetic fields may hurt the heart is thus refuted.
Four iPod models were tested by the research team from the Food and Drug Administration and the report on the same is available in BioMedical Engineering Online.
A 3-coil sensor was used to measure the magnetic field created by the iPod at a distance of about 5 to 10 mm. Readings were then obtained for the magnetic field at different points 10mm from the iPod. The strength of the magnetic field of the iPod was found to be too small to interfere with the pacemaker.
Tonicum must be heaving a sigh of relief. Just last year a Portable Music Device aimed at DJ’s was released by them and the name is “Pacemaker.”
iPods are a great success and the CES has shown that iPods are likely to continue enthralling iPodders as they have done in the past.
